Sergio Hernandez - HE CAN!
Sergio Hernandez - HE CAN!

Sergio is one of El Rey's many loved students.  Below is a short letter from Sergio about his recent struggle with cancer.  Please help us help him by coming out to our summer showcase on August 20th and purchasing his "I CAN FIGHT CANCER" t-shirt.

I was diganosed with Hodgkins Disease, a type of lympohoma, on Super Bowl Sunday.  February 6th to be exact.  My first real thought was - "Oh my god... I won't need any type of major surgery!"  I was actually kinda glad because I knew it wasn't anything so crucial and that it was something that could be cured easily, but that doesn't mean I wasn't scared out of my mind and nervous.

I never knew what was ahead.  I went through 4 months of chemo and 14 days of radiation. I could never express how much I thank my parents and my family for staying with me for those long nights at the hospital and always being there for me.  I also want to thank my school, St. Viator, for being so understanding, and helping me with whatever I needed. There were about 4 things that made me feel better and, well for lack of a better term, normal.  They were music, playing drums, friends...and lots of anti-nausea medcine.

I'm really thankful for the staff at El Rey for always being understanding and caring.  They don't treat you just like a student there.  They welcome you and treat you like family.  No matter who you are.

I feel as if this all happened to me for a reason (and my mom always tells me this).  For a special certain purpose.  I just need to find what that is.

I want to thank(in no particular order): Mom & Dad, Nats, Alex, my grandparents (especially grandma), all my family, Alex Goneh, Becca (Beccers) Novakowski, Tim Gruensfelder, El Rey Music Center, St. Viator, St. Paul, Arianna Osvath, Britteny Youkhana, Mike Fowle, Zac Jehn, Fr. Corey, Kira Busse, Megan Zupko, Mary Swackhammer, Katie Krebs, Mrs. Linke, Mrs. Heinze, Mr. Young, Paul Mendoza, Casa, Anyone who gave me or signed a card, and everyone who made me feel normal.
